Specific gems and precious stones have been associated with the different times of the year since ancient times. However, it was not until the 20th century that an official list of birthstones was drawn up by the American Gem Society. Birthstones are ideal for custom jewelry gifts, birthday gifts or holidays during the month, these are the birthstones most closely associated with each month.
Garnet (January) – Though people most commonly think of garnets as red, these stones actually come in a variety of colors.
Amethyst (February) – Amethyst is a variety of quartz that is generally purple in color, with shades ranging from pale lavender to deep indigo.
Aquamarine (March) – Aquamarine is a pale blue stone with great clarity, generally much lighter in color than the Sapphire.
Diamond (April) – Lucky April birthdays get to claim the diamond as their own, both white and colored varieties.
Emerald (May) – The vibrant green emerald is the rarest of all gemstones, but its vivid color makes it a great choice for the beginning of spring.
Alexandrite (June) – The magic of alexandrite is that it changes colors in different lights. Outdoors, this gem looks green or blue, but inside under artificial light it appears red or orange.
Ruby (July) – The deep red ruby is much darker and richer in color than January’s garnet. It is among the most uncommon of all gemstones.
Peridot (August) – Peridot is a lime green gemstones that is unique in that it comes in only a single color.
Sapphire (September) – The dark blue sapphire is much deeper in color than the aquamarine, more sea blue than sky blue.
Opal (October) – Opals tend to come in a variety of colors, and each individual stone has a rainbow of sparkles contained within it.
Topaz (November) – Topaz is warm and orange in color, the perfect shade for fall birthdays.
Turquoise (December) – Turquoise is a stone native to the Americas. It comes in a variety of greens and blues, with darker blues considered highest in value.
